Over the academic year FemEng has continued to provide educational platforms for student in engineering. The year started off with a FemEng mixer event, it was great to see so many new interested faces!
In October, we hosted Jaguar Land Rover for a networking and information evening, they gave a very interesting presentation about their company and their internship and graduate schemes.We also held a FutureYou event, students and alumni showed presented how they got involved in internship programs and what they learned. Our mentoring scheme was set up, pairing years 1 to 3 with students further in their studies to help give some guidance. Feedback has shown that this has been very helpful and successful with most pairs in regular contact.
In November we had a very interesting and relevant Discussion Panel, an all female panel discussed renewable energies, their viability and what we as engineers need to consider so that we design responsibly in the future. The panel consisted of guest speakers from various backgrounds in renewables, environmental engineering and the oil industry. The event was very interesting and insightful, it was great to see such a high attendance, active discussion and engagement from the students.
At the end of term we invited students to come and study in the new James Watt Creativity Suite, providing tea, coffee and snacks. This allowed students to work and study in a relaxed environment away from the library, meet new people and grab a cup of coffee on us. FemEng are committed to supporting students throughout the semester, our “Anti-Social Socials” are very effective in reaching and supporting students during the exam diet.
Over this term we have had several outreach events including workshops and activities at a SmartSTEM event at Ayrshire College, an introduction to engineering at Calderside Academy and a visit to West Coats Primary School.
We are also excited to announce FemEng came third in the Bloomberg Diversity Award, run by The Tab, meaning that members of our committee are now able to receive industry mentoring and diversity training. Thank you to everyone that gave us recognition for our efforts and voted for us!
In conjunction with International Women's Week, we hosted a film night showing ‘Hidden Figures’ as well as a Discussion Panel event the following evening, on the role of robotics, artificial intelligence and automation in technology, a growing trend within the developing world. We will be holding another FutureYou, hosting female lecturers from Glasgow University’s Engineering department. Due to the popularity of the last “AntiSocial-Social” we will be providing tea and coffee over a few days in the summer exam diet, dates are to be confirmed.
Finally we have a very exciting new event taking place over the Easter break, commencing on April 3rd 2018! The Interconnect Energy Project is a group competition supported by Interconnect, and organised by two of the Interconnect Student Champions (Brogan Gauld, President of FemEng and Interconnect Student Champion at Glasgow University and Hannah Houston, Interconnect Student Champion at Strathclyde University).
The project will involve students from Glasgow University, Glasgow Caledonian and Strathclyde University. Teams will be set tasks using a brief co-developed by FemEng and Mott MacDonald, with the aim of designing a wind farm. The project will involve mentoring and tutorials, including exposure and training on how to use the industry program WAsP. The project will finish with a presentation day at SSE, with networking, refreshments and prizes to be won! A huge thank you to our sponsors SSE and Mott MacDonald. In addition to the Glasgow events, the FemEng in Rwanda team has now been chosen, this group of 8 girls will be traveling to Rwanda for three weeks to engage schoolgirls in engineering workshops, and encourage and promote STEM careers. We're very happy to announce that we are launching our new FemEng Mentoring system this year!
First and second year students will be paired with older students - they can ask for advice about their courses or get some internship & career tips.
Mentors are students from the years three, four and five, who will be able to pass their experiences on and improve their CVs at the same time!
